Mashpee is a town with a population of 12,946 in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States. It is located on the western part of Cape Cod surrounded by Sandwich (north), Barnstable (east), Nantucket Sound (south) and Falmouth (west). Mashpee has a total area of 27.2 square miles and is located only about 65 miles south of Boston. The name Mashpee is a native name that breaks down as mass-nippe which means “great water.” From this, translations such as “the great cove” and “the great pond” have been made. The waterfront creates great opportunity for outdoor activities which brings in an abundance of tourists each year. Mashpee is home of the South Cape Beach State Park and Lowell Holly Reservation.

There are numerous higher education opportunities within 60 miles of Mashpee. The University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth (North Dartmouth) offers over 60 major programs of study. The university has a student enrollment of over 8,700 with a student -faculty ratio of 16:1. Bridgewater State College is a public 4 year institute with a student enrollment of 9,655. The college offers study in 30 degree areas. Bristol Community College has a campus in Fall River, approximately 44 miles from Falmouth. This two year college offers transfer programs of study. This enables and prepares students to pursue associate degrees or certificates. Massasoit Community College has a campus about 46 miles away in Brockton which offers certificate and associate degree programs. Roger Williams University located in Bristol is another great choice. This schools offers bachelor degrees in architecture, arts, fine arts and science. Master degrees can also be obtained in architecture, science in criminal justice, arts in teaching, arts in literacy, public administration and arts in forensic psychology. Pre professional programs include Pre-Law, Pre-Medical and Pre-Veterinary. The Mashpee School System serves the towns students. Over 2,000 students attend the school systems three schools. Mashpee High serves grades 7-12 and is located at 500 Old Barnstable Rd. The school opened in 1996 and has a total student enrollment of 1,001. Quashnet School with a total student enrollment of 675 includes grades 3-6. Finally Kenneth Coombs School offers pre kindergarden - grade 2 education and has a student enrollment of 488. If you are interested in private education, Cape Cod Regional Technical High School (Harwich), is an option. Upon acceptance there is no cost.

South Cape Beach State Park, located on Great Oak Rd, is a great place to spend the day. It has a beautiful white sand beach, scenic surroundings along with recently added boardwalks. Another great attraction is the Lowell Holly Reservation Trail which allows visitors to walk through and admire the surrounding natural preserved forest. There are a variety of great beaches in Mashpee. Attaquin Park is on the Mashpee-Wakeby pond. It is located on lake Avenue and offers picnic areas, a playground and lifeguard supervision throughout the summer. For the golf enthusiasts the town offers a number of courses. Quashnet Valley Country Club is a public course located at 309 Old Barnstable Rd. This 18 hole course with a 72 par opened in 1988. Golf professional, Bob Chase is the current manager. The Golf Club at Southport is a private 9 hole course with a 56 par. It opened in 2003 and is located at 43A Leisure Green Dr N. Willowbend is another 9 hole private course. It opened one year later in 2004 and has a par of 72. This course can be found at 100 Willow Bend Dr. Mashpee is also home to an annual pow wow. Through various activities it celebrates native american culture with emphasis on the Wampanoag tribe.
